Airshows have been popular for many years. During the 1920′s pilots began flying their airplanes across the country to demonstrate their flying skills, show off airplanes which were quite new at that time, and offer rides in the aircraft. The air show takes place at the same spot where many famous scenes of the 1980′s box office hit “Top Gun” was filmed. The Red Baron, Greatest Flying Ace of World War I

The name “Red Baron” was the nickname given to World War I flying ace Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen. Richthofen was born in Kleinberg, Germany in 1892 to a noble family. He begain training for a career in the military when he was only 11 years old.

At the beginning of World War I, Richthofen saw action in the trenches of France and Belgium. In 1915, he became a pilot. Beginning in late 1917, Richthofen began to compile many victories in air to air combat.

1909 – Loius Bleriot Flies Across the English Channel

Louis Bleriot, a name synonymous with victory, may not be a name you readily recognize. Born in Cambrai, France, in 1872, Bleriot grew to become a highly recognized inventor. He received a degree at the Arts and Trades from cole Centrale Paris and earned a reputation for his invention of headlamps for automobiles.

Bleriot’s love for inventing did not fall short of anything spectacular as he began constructing his own aircraft. With consistent tweaking and re-configuring, his creations soon became known for their performance and later the basis on which other monoplanes were built.

A Brief History of Air Mail Service

Airplanes have been used throughout history for a variety of purposes. Air mail service was provided thorough the use of aircraft designed to travel long distances. In the U.S. this travel started in 1911 as a government sponsored service for domestic mail. In 1918 it was officially adopted by the United States Post Office. In 1926 a new regulation called the “Kelly Act” established that only government operated airplanes could transport mail. The Story of the First Helicopter Flight

Helicopter flights today are quite different from the first helicopter flight. The story of the first helicopter flight was not able to take the passengers on a long journey. In fact, Jacques and Lewis Breguet invented the first helicopter to lift off from the ground. It was named the Gyroplane number 1.
